In 1904 van Rees left for Paris. He stayed in Montmartre with a.o. the young Picasso and Kees van Dongen. On the first of April 1905 he rented a farmhouse in Fleury-en-Biere, a small village close to Barbizon. Van Dongen joined him in the summer of 1905.
In Fleury-en-Biere van Rees painted his compositions in robust brushstrokes like an enlarged form of pointillist technique and was very inspired by the van Gogh works he had seen in Paris. (cf. cat. van Dongen & le Bateau Lavoir, Musee de Montmartre, 16 February -26 August 2018, pp 65-73)
