Van Regteren Altena was one of the so-called 'Amsterdamse Joffers'. She mainly produced (flower) still lives. She painted this work in Apeldoorn according to an inscription on the stretcher where she lived with her parents between 1897-1917

Robert Verly was a Belgian administrator and painter in Congo in the 1950’s

He set up ateliers to preserve and pass on the craftmanship of the last surviving Congolese sculptors.
 Verly wanted to protect the sculptors from external (Western, commercial) influences and stimulate the continued development of the indigenous art styles

His paintings are seldom appear on the market and are therefore very rare
